What Is Ifá?
Ifá is the voice of Olodumare, the Supreme Being. It is the ancient system of knowledge, spirituality, and divination originating from Ile-Ife, the sacred city considered the birthplace of Yoruba civilization. It encompasses a vast corpus of oral literature, philosophical teachings, and spiritual practices that address every aspect of human existence.
At its core, Ifá teaches that every person is born with Àyànmọ́ (a unique destiny) and that through proper alignment with spiritual forces, ancestral guidance, and noble character development, one can fulfill this destiny and contribute to the harmony of Creation.
Orunmila and the Wisdom Tradition
Orunmila — also known as Àgbọnnìrègún — is the Orisa of wisdom, knowledge, and divination. He was present at the creation of the universe and witnessed the choosing of each person's destiny, making him the ultimate authority on human purpose and spiritual alignment.
The Babaláwo (priests of Ifá) serve as intermediaries, accessing Orunmila's wisdom through the sacred divination system to provide guidance, resolve conflicts, and prescribe spiritual remedies for the challenges of life.
The Odù Ifá Corpus
The Odù Ifá is a vast literary corpus comprising 256 Odù (chapters), each containing hundreds of ese (verses) that encode the entirety of Yoruba philosophical, medical, scientific, and spiritual knowledge.
Through the process of divination, specific Odù are revealed that speak directly to the querent's situation, providing not just answers but deep philosophical context, historical precedents, and prescribed actions for alignment with destiny.
Key Concepts
Orí
One's prenatal choice and personal deity — it is the seat of destiny and the repository of one's natural gifts and talents.
Àṣẹ
The divine power of creation and transformation inherent in all things — the force that makes things happen.
Ìwà
Existence — the foundation of all spiritual attainment and the measure of a person's true worth.
Ẹbọ
Sacrifice and spiritual offering — the prescribed remedies and alignments revealed through divination.
Orisa
The divine forces of nature — manifestations of the Supreme Being that govern various aspects of existence.
Egungun
One's personal ancestors — the source of collective unconscious, which informs the shared vision of a lineage and a people.
