"We see facial scarification on the body Without knowing their maker A young mortal became a divinity But no one knew the priest who prepared him to be a divinity We see the marks on the palms But we know not their maker We see the shadow but not the feet with which it follows us - Holy Odu ObaraOse
These were the messengers of Ifa, who divined for Lagboburu, the mother of Ogun. She was barren. One day, she climbed to the top of a hill, from where she saw a hen with her chicks. Lagboburu began to weep out loud, wondering why the same God who gave a hen children could not reward her with children of her own. Just then, she heard a loud voice, commanding her to stop crying and to visit the house of Orunmila. Immediately, Lagboburu descended the hill and went straight to Orunmila's house. In the divination, Orunmila told her that she would sacrifice in order to give birth to a powerful child. Lagboburu made the sacrifice and in time, she gave birth to a baby boy. He was born with a miniature spear and hammer in his hands. The young man proved to be extreme in his behavior, causing trouble everywhere he went. When the situation became overly embarrassing, Lagboburu took him to Orunmila to consult Ifa. It was at that point that Orunmila used an incantation that caused Ogun to crawl on all fours and beg Orunmila for food. But Orunmila said he must first be chained, after which Ogun was given a dog, palm wine and palm oil. These were the first sacrifices given to Ogun.

Too many of us have given birth to mighty sons and daughters, but then failed to properly nourish and educate them. We see them act out and demand special attention, we shrink in embarrassment when they act out in ways that defy all social order but we refuse to take them to the places where they can become grounded and empowered. This is a tragedy of the highest order.
