From the esentaiye ritual, performed at birth, to the countless orisa festivals that fill the annual calendar, the members of the community are gradually initiated into the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual values that contribute to the collective identity of the people.  

When we grow up in urban environments, separated from these rites of passage, we end up being initiated into the community of individuals. We may develop and mature, but we lose the ability to belong. Without belonging, we never fully participate either. Consequently, lonliness and isolation prevails.
