Show, Don't Tell

9/18/2014

The elders discourage talkative habits. The idea seems to be that, the more you talk the more likely it is that you will either lie or commit an error. This is particularly challenging for people with the gift of gab. When words come easily, you will naturally tend to rely upon them as frequent as possible.

Unfortunately, we live in an era that is characterized by opinion masquerading as fact. As a result, knowledge is hardly recognized and rarely valued. People today either tend to disbelieve what they are told or to take everything as subjective and negotiable.

It's enough to frustrate even the most patient teachers. It is very trying when your students second guess or freely interpret the teachings when you know that certain things are just non-negotiable. In times like these, the only way to teach is by example. You must show, not tell. The only place you can lead people is where you are willing to go yourself. Live the medicine.
